It all happened on June 7, 1893. When Gandhi was on a train ride to Pretoria. He was thrown off the train because a white man did not like his presence. Even though he had a ticket. This awakened his Civil Right's side to fight for the "deep disease of color prejudice." He then formed the Natal Indian Congress in 1894. Once his contract expired he had made plans to return to India. Until he learned at his farewell party of a bill that wouldn't allow Indians to vote. People wanted him to stay a fight the legislation. He took a brief trip to India in the late 1896 and early 1897. After the trip he returned to South Africa with his wife and two children. His wife Kasturba would give birth to two more children one in 1897 and another in 1900. During the outbreak of Boer War, he put together an all Indian group of 1,100 volunteers to support the British cause. He said Indians need to fight for their rights.
After being in London for several months he returned to India in, 1915. He lived an austere life devoted to prayer, fasting, and meditation. He became Mahatma which means "Great Soul." He became a leading figure in India. Gandhi was arrested in 1992 by the British. He was guilty of three counts of sedition. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison. Until he was released in 1994 after his appendicitis surgery. While he was in jail though the India's Hindus and the Muslims devolved. So he went on a three week fast to bring unity.
