The salt march started when Great Britain taxed the Indians for salt, which is a great part of there food culture. this mostly effected the poor class that didn't have enough money to pay for the tax. On March 12 Gandhi set out from his ashram to the Arabian sea with a few followers to convert salt water to salt. Along the 240 mile journey Gandhi addressed more and more people getting a bigger crowd along the way. By April 5 Gandhi had a crowd of tens of thousands of people at the Arabian Sea. The next morning he prayed and went down to the water to make salt. Millions Indians followed his lead for Civil Rights and many were arrested, 60,000 Indians and Gandhi himself were arrested. Gandhi was arrested on May 5 but the Civil Rights movement went on without him.
